A vintage F1 style car with a steel tube frame and fiberglass panels, it can have headlights if you want. But it should be able to use eighth gen Civic mechanicals ( Brakes, Engine, Suspension ) The only reason it would use eighth gen Civic parts is to keep the cost down and leave room for modification.

The idea that’s been floating around in my head for a while is a diy builder’s championship using the 1.5L formula with a bit more safety. Everyone’s just going to put a Hayabusa motor in at that point, so it shouldnt’ get too ridiculous.

Need a longitudinal mounted engine.

I suggest the Audi C5 platform. Lots of variety of engines and transmissions and lots of cheap donors.

Yeah I was thinking the Civics transverse mounted engine might be a bit of and issue

What about bolting a C5/C6 (or any LS really) engine right up to a C5/C6 transmission? Probably places the wheels a bit further back but LS.

Vettes aren’t cheap platforms nor do they have options. Kit cars need variety for a broader appeal.

Like a modern formula vee? Could possibly be easier with a different drivetrain, but still a an interesting idea

That is quite a bit bigger than what I had in mind, maybe a S2000 or S13 or something

I have a more feasible idea. I though of a tube-frame car with a Can-Am style body (but with recessed projector headlights, indicators, a tiny windshield with a tiny wiper, a bikini top, and the like) powered by a Buick 3800SC powertrain with something like an arduino to provide paddle shift input. The front subframe would be from an E36, and the engine management would be Megasquirt to keep wiring simple and allow mapping to be adjusted on the fly with every new tweak. Sculpt out the cabin wide enough for two, and give it concealed storage in the nose. Essentially something that looks like a McLaren M8A and is still as useable as an Elise.

Subaru’s also an option.

So basically an Ariel Atom with a vintage body? This is an idea I can get behind!

You can use a 1.8-4.2 i4/v6/v8 turbo or non turbo depending on your poor A6. With plenty of support for each.

But why would you want any of that when you could the obvious/venerable LS? Reliable power, can’t say that for a few Audi engines.

Do you have LS’s for a few hundred dollars on your craigslist?

I was only referring to the engine/trans Because the vette has a transaxle.

IIRC I remember some drifter saying an LS swap has like no weight penalty over a turbo S13 because actually a truck motor. So why not V8 with 350+hp?

Insert “power for pennies” here.

To be honest this sounds, in some ways, like the Factory Five 818... but as a Can Am car. Which is brilliant!

I’ve been kicking this idea around for a while, except I want a V8 because F1 (and ‘Murica!). What I really want to do is use a Ford 4.6L SOHC because I think, with a little machining, you could spin the heads around and make it a hot-vee engine.
